UTC - Apple - Goodby Rendezvous, Hello 'Bonjour'
Apple to rename Rendezvous technology "Bonjour"

I remember first hearing about this in relation to a company telling someone who made a "Rendezvous" plugin for a little application called Proteus, adding thoes capabilities to the program...

He was told to drop the name "Rendezvous" by another company, as they said it violated their copyright. If I recall their copyright was for "Tibco Rendezvous" and the person commented he was not using that full term, but simply "Rendezvous" -- which Apple had in fact granded a patent for. Seemed like a logical arguement to me, but he ended up dropping the name, and the company indicated they would in fact file suit against Apple...

Well, they did, and the suit has been settled out of court...

Apple is now changing the name to "Bonjour" which sounds a little cleche to me... They were considering the name "OpenTalk" but thought it sounded to "tehcie"... I actually prefer the name OpenTalk, as it sounds more like a proper noun than "Bonjour" does... I was also thinking "OpenNet" sounded kinda cool too... But that's my opinion I guess...

Being there are TONS of products out there today which utilize the term Rendezvous, it's gona take some time for that term to disappear... There are countless network switches and things like wireless hard drives that all utilize the technology...

Oh well, guess I'll have to get used to using "Bonjour"...

Ahem -- "Does that wireless access point have Bonjour?"
