    UTC - Schiavo Falsehoods
I've tried to stay out of this as much as possible, however being it's everywhere it's impossible to avoid it. There are a lot of inaccurate statements going around, and the media is fully helping to spread the disinformation without bothering to verify it... So I thought I'd mention them... I'm going to make this short, so I'm not going to bother direct links to the info. If you've got the time, verify it yourself...

      1. Michael is the ONLY person to claim hearing Terri request to be removed from life support.
This is false. In a 2002 trial the judge stated that the sole word of Michael would NOT be enough to support a ruling to remove Terri from life support. Michael's brother & sister both testified to hearing Terri say she didn't want to be on life support. Neither of their testimonies were in any way deemed to be inaccurate or false. There were others who testified as well...

      2. Michael has failed to prove this was her wish.
This is false. There have been a NUMBER of full court trials and re-trials on this issue, and Michael has overwhelmingly won them. Remember Terri has been in this condition for 15 years now, and Michael did not just start this campaign recently.

      3. The doctor for Terri's parents, who was nominated for a Nobel Prize says Terri is not in a persistent vegistative state
Do a little research... This doctor was in fact NEVER nominated for the Nobel Prize... Yet some media outlets repeated this more times than someone can count on one hand. I did a quick search, this can be verified here...

      4. Look at Terri -- She is NOT in a Vegistative State!
There is a difference to being in a Vegistative State and being in a coma. Sometimes you get both, sometimes someone can be in a vegistative state, yet still be able to move. The movements of Terri are being controlled by a portion of the brain that controls involuntary actions. This portion does NOT have the ability to comprehend information and even understand she's alive. And aside from the dishonest non-Nobel Prize nominated doctor above, every doctor who has examined her, including countless doctors assigned by the courts, have all stated without a doubt that she is in a vegistative state and not coming back. Most people/doctors who have claimed she is not in that kind of state are doing so based solely on a single video showing Terri... To diagnose someone using only that evidence without any medical background or first person exposure is preposterous. That would be like someone diagnosing me with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and that I have 2 artificial hips, based solely on how I walk. You could reason something isn't quite right about how I walk, but in reality you couldn't even tell if it's due to something like a sprained ankle as compared to my disabilitating medical condition.

      5. Michael is just in it for money!
This is false. Michael was offered 1 million of dollars at one point by someone in exchange for keeping her on life support. Michael turned it down. The amount of money won for Terri's malpractice settlement in 1993 was $1 million. So Michael stood/stands to gain that amount AT MOST! That wouldn't include the minus of lawyer fees and whatever money went to treat Terri... You can verify the money offer to him here

      6. Nobody has ever given her rehabilitation. Michael won't allow it!
This is false. She has been in a coma for 15 years. Michael did in fact have her go though rehabilitation, which included (but was not limited to) bringing Terri to California to have experimental therapies. I ran across a timeline which details all this, and gives some perspective over the whole case to date. It's part way down on this page

      7. Congress made a ruling, they HAVE to re-insert the tube!
Though it's not had a chance to be challenged yet, the Congress is not allowed to make a law directed solely at a single individual. It's unconstitutional for the Congress to dictate control over a private individual.

      8. She's starving to death -- that's a painful and horrible way to die!
This is incorrect. MANY medical professionals have come forward to say of all the ways to die, dyeing due to lack of nutrition is one of the most peaceful ways of dyeing. I thought it would be horrible myself until I heard this. Then I realized the most painful thing about dyeing of starvation is going on being hungry. If you aren't able to register that you're hungry, the rest is completely painless...

      9. Michael Murdered Terri!!!
Being there is OVERWHELMING evidence to the contrary, and no solid evidence in support of this theory, this theory has no real basis. It's mainly the people who want to keep Terri alive by any means necessary that have pushed this story forward. By the way, if you would like to learn more about what actually happened, read this story...

      10. Terri has never even had a CAT Scan!
This is false. I'm quoting from teh page with the timeline I mention above. They summerized a courts decision, which includes the simple statement that she HAS had one!
The Second District's first opinion in this case explained:

Since 1990, Theresa has lived in nursing homes with constant care. She is fed and hydrated by tubes. The staff changes her diapers regularly. She has had numerous health problems, but none have been life threatening.

Over the span of this last decade, Theresa's brain has deteriorated because of the lack of oxygen it suffered at the time of the heart attack. By mid 1996, the CAT scans of her brain showed a severely abnormal structure. At this point, much of her cerebral cortex is simply gone and has been replaced by cerebral spinal fluid. Medicine cannot cure this condition. Unless an act of God, a true miracle, were to recreate her brain, Theresa will always remain in an unconscious, reflexive state, totally dependent upon others to feed her and care for her most private needs.

      --
Welp, that's all I can remember right now... You can probably figure out where I stand based off of my statements above. Frankly, Michael is doing EXACTLY what I hope my wife would do if I were in a similar state. And it's what I would do if I knew my wife wanted that to be done. He could have given up long ago -- and got paid very nicely to do it. I truly believe he is trying to carry out the wishes of his wife. That's his only goal here. I think it shows just how much he cares about her...

If I end up in that position I would want the tube pulled. This is the first time I'm documenting this anywhere by the way. I believe the majority of people in this country would request the same thing. However, how often to people actually get to writing these down? I'm not in the best shape medically, and I have come extremely close to dyeing after suffering an infection and septic shock... One day I plan on recording my wishes in a will... However, I may die long before I ever get around to it...

In my case, however, my mother has stated if I were in that position, she would pull the plug. My fiance understands this too...

I truly would like to believe that if I were ever to end up in that position, my wife would care about me enough to do all that Michael is doing for position... I also would like her to find someone else to be with -- to make her happy. AND if I had life insurance, I would also like her to collect on it, because it would most likely make things easier for her... So from my perspective, I think Michael is not this terrible guy that so many activists are making him out to be...
