Local Politician Unknowingly Funky, Freaky
Some guy who's name happens to be Rick James is running for city council. Not so surprisingly, because of Dave Chappelle the "Vote Rick James" signs have been being stolen... As a result the James campaign team is asking Comedy Central for a donation to compensate them for the stolen signs...
'We would appreciate a small campaign donation for more signs, as we are working-class people and financing this campaign out of our own pockets,' wrote Diane James to the cable channel. 'Each time a sign is stolen, it costs us $4.75!'
While that does seem unfortunate, it's wrong for them to seemingly "blame" Comedy Central based solely on the fact that they're happening to do skits about a famous singer by the same name... It's not as if Comedy Central played ANY role in naming either the Singer or the guy running for city council...
For the record I regularly get emails from people talking to me about "Bobby Thompson", a baseball player who hit a grand slam to win the world series (or something like that), many many years ago... I know nothing about him, it just so happens I share his name.
Would it be right for me to expect compensation from someone related to him or whatever every time someone visits my site and uses bandwidth that I pay for looking for info on him??? Or the time I spend reading emails people send me??? This would be beyond ridiculous, just as Rick James' request...
Of coarse besides all this, the one thing this guy is getting is free publicity. How many people running for city council -- from some random city in some random state -- are mentioned in national news??? I think the guy would be much better off embracing the publicity rather than attacking Comedy Central...
