UTC - Tivo - From Bad To Worse...
Well, wouldn't you know it... Tivo had recently (though according to them mistakenly) implemented a feature to prevent some shows from being retained more than a defined period (in other words, you record a show, and that show is automatically deleted after 7 days regardless of weather or not you watched it yet).

Well, as of the 6th, Tivo is introducing a new little "feature". You see, you will be REQUIRED to sign up for a 1 year contract, and early termination will result in $150 early terminiation fee... So in other words, to prevent people from leaving due to this new "feature", they are making it so the customers cannot get out of their contract. I'm highly doubting this new contract agreement is independant of the feature mentioned above. I do believe it was a bug (as in it shouldn't have been active yet) but I also believe they are going to wait until more people are in manditory contracts before purposely instating this feature...

People are gona hate Tivo more than their cell phone providers at this rate...

        Bobby,

The big difference between the cell phone manufacturing and TiVo is that the Cell phone company doesn't care about you. You won't experience dropped calls (or shows for that matter) and crappy reception from a TiVo box. You will love it in a way that only owners can understand. I've been a TiVo customer for years and if you ask most of us, we love TiVo. In fact their churn is amazingly low. The marketplace is changing quickly though and the fact is that the cable companies are ruining tv forever with their generic boxes. TiVo has to respond. They've offered rebates in the past, but have never required a commitment. Now they simply ask that if you are going to take their rebate, then you have to stick around for a year. Believe me most people won't be cancelling their service after one year. My recomendation is to take the lifetime option.

You see, you say that NOW...

What happens 6 months from now when you miss half your recorded Tivo shows because Tivo deleted them automatically...

Would you STILL feel so loyal???

If you find your favorate show can no longer be recorded by Tivo because they completely block that one due to request of the shows creator...

Would you STILL feel so loyal???

It seem to me with what's comming up, its like walking on thin ice... You really don't know if you are going to break though...

I was considering buying one, but now with these two little things that popped up, I'm extremely reluctant to do it now... My VCR isn't that great, but at least it keeps anything I record until I want to get rid of it... And it dosen't charge me a monthly fee or $150 if I try to cancel that fee...
