This story is just appalling. If you believe police are here to protect and serve, this story proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the police would rather make your life a living hell than taking a few seconds to answer "hey, how do I get to the freeway from here?"
Couple Arrested For Asking For Directions In summary, a couple leaves a baseball game in an area they've never been to before & get lost trying to find the freeway. They see a police vehicle, so they go over to it & say "Thank goodness, can you tell us how to get to the 95?" The cop says "you ran a stop sign!" Now, this is probably correct. When you are lost & looking for help, its easy to miss a sign. It's happened to all of us at one time or another. So the couple says "okay, I guess we did, write us a ticket. Now can you tell us how to get to the freeway?" The cop responded "NO!" Then tells them "you got here on your own, you can get back on your own." So the couple, still completely lost sees another police car. They drive over to it to ask that cop for help, but the first cop steps between their car & the other car saying "my partner isn't going to help you if I'm not." This situation has obviously gone way to far, and this cop obviously forgot who she works for & who pays her salary, not to mention what she does for a living. So, the couple, pretty much out of options at this point, calls their parents, who coincidentally are police officers as well (at this time I will give them the benefit of the doubt). They pulled over on the curb & turned on their emergency lights & made the call. A few minutes later they both end up in custody for trespassing. Eight hours later they're released without being charged (geese, who would have guessed)... This police officer should read what her car says at some point. It says To Protect & Serve, not To Purposely Be An Ass. I can only assume she got that question wrong on her exam. Needless to say this story is outrageous. The police always tell us there here for our protection and help, but this kind of thing shows as far as they're concerned, everybody is a criminal and everybody deserves to be treated that way. This cop deserves punishment, but I'm guessing nothing will come of it. And of course cops will continue to do these things because they know with the blue wall in place, nobody will ever call them on it. The ONLY time a police officer gets disciplined for not doing their job properly is when there is enough public outcry that they have no choice. There may be some here, but I'm guessing the level of outcry in this case will be nowhere near enough to actually force them to do anything. But I may be wrong, only time will tell. I really wish the story contained the officer's name... [UPDATE] Well there's a follow up story indicating that the police report is different than what the couple said, but being I had a cop flat out lie to me then all but admit he was lying 5 seconds later, I'm not exactly willing to fully believe the police's version (read that story here). However, the police report STILL included the following: The police report of the circumstances indicates Preston told the couple she would arrest them for trespassing -- on a public street lined with public housing units. So, the report does admit that the officer threatened to arrest the couple for being somewhere they were fully allowed to be by law. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a cop would threaten to arrest someone for a crime that their own police report states wasn't valid. It doesn't say they were in a no parking zone or a construction zone. So yeah, the officer threatened to arrest the couple for doing something 100% legal, then proceeded to do so because (by their report) the person told them they didn't want to deal with the officer... Essentially what it boils down to is even if the police report is fully accurate (which I personally don't believe), the cop was still out of line...
I agree completely. cops are not here to protect and serve. They are corrupt liars. That same officer had probably just run 10 red rights at 90 mph in order to get free donuts. I am with you guys. I hate cops. I hate them so much that when the news talks about a cop dying on duty, I applaud the criminal. On 9-11 when all those cops ran into the trade center and died, I wished more of them joined them. It's also not just American cops. I traveled to South America last year, and those cops are even worse. The families of cops who die on duty should not be sad, cops choose to take a job that makes other peoples lives worse with costly tickets, so they deserve whatever they get from criminals. KILL COPS!! fuck the police they are noyhing but people who suffered as teenagers and now they are taking it out on societymore guns=less cops die you pigs die come and get me you anti gun nazis better bring more than a 9mm they are not there to protect and serve. they are mere dui security officers who sit in bar parking lots and wait and arrest you before you even get to your car.there nazis.i challenge them to come to my home and pull their shit a cop overheard a coversation i was having about concealedcarry permit and stepped in and said he would arrest me if he knew i was carrying a legal firearm.his thoughts were that only police and military should have guns and i am a threat to society.i think im more proficient w/firearm than 99% of pigs and if a cop would try to arrest me for carrying a gun legally i would take the life sentence and kill the filthy pig w/my legally owned gun.if any cops read this bring it on you anti freedom nazis i will win and you better bring more than a9mm.DIE PIGS DIE.MORE GUNS=LESS COPS the only good cops i know are dead cops.the get what they deserve.the lie, plant evidence, etc.we civilians should police them and see how they like harrassment.the pig who lied about my dui, ihope to see w/out his gun and badge because i will show him justice and i hope his children are w/him so they see what little man he is w/out his gunand badge I hate pigs too! They don't prevent crime or defend citizens, they just clean up the carnage after the crime is committed. No one can or should rely on those pathetic assholes for anything. It's the Cap't Billy Badass types I really despise. The one's with the superiority complex and ugly disposition, ie. the worst possible person to become a cop. I got pulled by one in Henrico Co, Va for having a tail light out (that was one bulb out of the four on one side). When he got up to my window, he immediately told me to put out my cigarette (He was dipping smokeless tobacco, btw and had a fat wad under his lip). I told him "Hell no, I'm not putting out my cigarette! I make the payments on this car and I call the shots in it. Now why did you pull me?" He didn't press the issue and attempted to drill me about where I was coming from and where I was going. I had to interrupt him and ask why he pulled me over a second time. After the game of 1000 questions was over, I jumped out and replaced the bulb while he took his sweet ass time checking my registration. This prick had me pulled over for a half-hour and finally let me go without a ticket. When I pulled out from the restaurant parking lot, he came flying up on my ass and follwed me all the way to the interstate. He even followed me onto the exit ramp and then punched it at the last minute and flew around me to keep going straight. Now that right there is a PIG and just one more reason to hate those God damned worthless pricks!
